Fish Bridge Cheap

Description
Original Art
This work tells a story about the relationship between the waterways traversing through the city of Brisbane which lead to the rivers and ocean, and their role as a vehicle for passage, sustenance and safe harbours.
My robust oil stick lines build a link to the natural fibres used in the making of fish traps, and eel traps. My New Zealand heritage, Māori Indigenous influence and fondness for lines and shapes are a constant thread in my work. Hatch marks, symbolise a place to rest and hold onto for me. They also represent the ways and places people gather to form a community, stay safe and form connections.
The once formative organic traps used for fishing are now replaced by woven structures, bridges and landmarks in the Brisbane area. The urban formwork and structures do not represent traps to me, but more so a way of representing a safe place for people to come together. No matter who you are these works represent a joyful, organic space to come and go flowing through our respective journeys in life.
